Boost #83 Rosh HaShana

Do not take the name of the Lord, your God, in vain

The Mishna teaches: On Rosh HaShana every creature is judged.

Some understand this to mean that everything in the coming year is predetermined. But this cannot be, for we are granted free choice.
Rather, the judgment is about potential. On Rosh HaShana, God determines the full range of possibilities for each of us in the year ahead. How our year unfolds depends on the choices we—and those around us—make within those possibilities.
Our prayers on Rosh HaShana for life are prayers for good potential. With health and prosperity, we can do more good. With time to learn Torah and a clear mind, we can better understand God’s light. With peace, we can devote ourselves to ensuring that everyone is cared for.
But more than anything else, the key to what potential we are given is our intention: the resolve to use everything we receive to shine God’s light into the world. That light is nothing less than God’s name. We not only refrain from taking it in vain, but we consciously strive to sanctify it.
Some time on Rosh HaShana—dig deep and uncover your purest intention: to live for Kiddush HaShem, the sanctification of God’s name.

Set your intention for the day by reciting The Aseret Affirmation: Ten for Ten first thing in the morning.

Wishing you safety and strength,
