Do Not Covet
Today is Rosh Chodesh Elul—the first day of the Hebrew month of Elul, the month we get to prepare before the High Holy Days.
As we begin reflecting on our actions, the command “Do not covet” reminds us not only to avoid envy, but to focus inward—on our own strengths and challenges.
Rav Yeruchem Levovitz, the great Mussar teacher, would say: “Oy, if you don’t know what you need to fix. But oy vavoy, if you don’t know your virtues!”
How do we discover our virtues? By taking the time to notice them.
One day this week, before going to sleep, take a quiet moment to review your day. Find one thing you did well—no matter how small. Then ask yourself: What does this say about me? Over time, you’ll uncover the treasures with.
Set your intention for the day by reciting The Aseret Affirmation: Ten for Ten first thing in the morning.
Wishing you safety and strength,
