Do Not Carry the Name of the Lord, your God, in vain
We recently celebrated my mother’s 90th birthday — a life of dignity, grace, and elevation. She lived, and continues to live, with awareness, as if always in the presence of something higher.
The Third Commandment says, “Do not carry the name of the Lord your G-d in vain.” The Hebrew uses the word “tisa” — “carry” — not “say.” This teaches us that we carry G-d’s name in how we live, not just how we speak.
To be in a covenant with G-d means He is our Father, King, Provider, Teacher, and Judge – we live in G-d’s presence. It isn’t only a belief — it’s an identity. It shapes our choices, our tone, our integrity.
How much does it affect us? That depends on how deeply we embrace the relationship. Ideally, it transforms everything.
Once a day this week, pause before you do something or say something and gather your intention to do it being in G-d’s presence and in G-d’s Covenant.
Set your intention for the day by reciting The Aseret Affirmation: Ten for Ten first thing in the morning.
Wishing you safety and strength,
Nitzan Bergman
